The title of this blog is a reference to a statement I once made that goes along the lines of, "I prefer the pop over the high culture". It was written at a time when I was becoming increasingly fed up with the attitudes and mind set of various literary critics that I had to read for a class I was taking at the time. So, I did what every young person does: rebel. I decided to try and, in my own mindset, rebel against the stuck up and elitist point of view that I was becoming engrossed in; instead I indulged in pulp fiction, pop culture and most importantly of all, the pictures.
Of course, I was full of it. I'm already a kind of pop culture elitist, as I think some film, music, and books are much much much more important than others. Not to mention I'm a notorious film snob, so I was an unknowing hypocrite. However, when creating this blog I thought long and hard about using this as a title. I knew I'd be a hypocrite when I write about films, among other things, that are commonly considered "high" art.
But, the more I thought about it, the more subjective it became. And the more I thought about what I wanted to use this blog for, the more I felt that it didn't really matter; so long as I had a snappy sounding title, of course. Seriously, what falls into high culture these days anyways? Choosing West Wing over Big Bang Theory, or is it watching Requiem For a Dream instead of Dazed and Confused? It's just subjective, and in the end totally unimportant (not to mention DaC has a Criterion release, so there). It's not just that either, that isn't what I intended this blog to be about anyways.
I didn't want to make a blog that would just be a showcase for reviews, there's a billion other places to do that. No, I wanted to use this to explore my odyssey through a sea of pop culture and to reflect it's impact on me through the ages. I'm sure there's going to be a little review here and there, but don't expect to see it. The journey begins now, welcome to my blog.
